Throughout my life, Eastern contemplative practice and traditional martial arts have played a role in my personal development. As a child, I was lucky enough to have several close family friends that were long-time practitioners of Chinese and Japanese Ways. Their influence and example led me to begin my own pursuit of these arts when I started to actively define myself as a young adult. At times I have been more and less serious in my martial practice, starting with Aiki exercises and games learned as a child, then a year studing Wing Chung and Tiger Claw Kung Fu, followed by three years spent intensively practicing Shotokan Karate.

In the Spring of 2002, I moved to Brattleboro to pursue a Master's Degree at the School for International Training, studing intercultural relations, sustainable development, and conflict transformation. Upon moving to the area, I found the Brattleboro School of Budo and began training to balance my mental study with physical discipline. In May of 2007, I earned the rank of Shodan in Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do under Kyoshi Donahue. Although I had walked some distance on the Martial Path before, it is in this Dojo that I feel like I have finally begun to climb up "the Mountain."

Professionally, I am working to develop a methodology based off of the principles and practices of Budo to supplement the preparation of Peaceworkers for the rigors of their chosen field. I am also continuing to develop local programs with Kyoshi Donahue's guidance, working with children with emotional and behavioral challenges, and with the Deaf community, through the practice of martial arts.
