Sempai Christopher Pong I originally came to the Brattleboro School of Budo in 2002 as a parent of a child in their children’s program. For months I would go to the dojo to provide transportation, but quickly found myself arriving earlier and earlier to sit and watch the classes. I was absolutely stuck by the values in the lessons taught by Kyoshi Donahue and his instructors; discipline, self reliance, effort, citizenship, and most importantly appreciation were common topics. When I finally decided that this was an organization I wanted to be a part of I was almost embarrassed to express interest in joining being in my thirties. I was welcomed warmly and my only regret remains not having joined ten years earlier. In the five years that I have been training in the martial arts I have earned the rank of Shodan in Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do and the rank of Yon-Kyu in Aiki-Budo. Aside from working with the great instructors who teach at the Brattleboro School of Budo I have also been lucky enough to work with a number of guest instructors like Soke Michael Pabst of Ohio, Sensei Sali Azem of New Hampshire, Sensei David Poulicakos of Maine, and Master Teruo Chinen of Washington. The practice of martial arts has contributed a great deal to my life and provided great challenge as well as great solace. Over the years it has deepened a sense of caring and compassion that has impacted all areas of my life from personal to professional. When I am not on the mat I am busy working locally in the accounting field and spending time with my family. Christopher Pong
