Children's Program

What can Budo training do for my child?

At the the Brattleboro School of Budo children learn important life skills such as patience, self-control, strong etiquette, responsibility and respect for all life.

The children's curriculum allows for the development of mind, body and spirit in a fun and non-violent way. Through on-going practice, children develop endurance skills such as strength, flexibility, balance and coordination -- all taught within a nurturing and supportive atmosphere. Lessons learned through sustained effort and cooperation in the Dojo help each child learn more about themselves and each other. Each child's potential is unique and highly respected. We strive to encourage growth and development in all areas of their lives through Budo training.

Children are introduced to the cultures of Japan and Okinawa. They will learn many things about the language, history and philosophy of that region of the world. Throughout the course of the year, many respected teachers from around the country and the world come to the School of Budo and share their knowledge with us. During the summer, we also provide several week-long Camp Bushido sessions filled with fun and intensive training for children and any adult students who wish to participate.

Shorin Ryu Karate Do classes are offered to children between the ages of 5 and 13. At the age of 13, children may begin training in the adult classes with Kyoshi Donahue's permission.

How do I sign up?

Come in for an evening class on either Monday or Thursday at 5:00 pm for your first class with Kyoshi Donahue (check out our schedule HERE). The first two classes are free and we encourage you to have your child participate before making up your mind. If either Monday or Thursday does not work for your schedule, call us to discuss another class day to begin.

At your first class you will receive an information packet filled with all you will need to know to begin, including tuition information, some basics about traditional dojo rules and ettiquete, along with a few forms to fill out when you are ready to sign up. Enrollment in our school is ongoing -- the right time to sign up is when you or your child is ready.

We do have many parents who join along with their children and share in the practice together, with adult classes taught right after children's class. Family package tuition discounts are available. For more information about tuition and signing up, click HERE.

Here at the Brattleboro School of Budo we feel it is very important to make an informed decision about what we have to offer. If you would like to make contact with us at any time, please call at (802) 257-4797, or e-mail at budojo@comcast.net.
