Traditional Martial Arts

Shidoshi Alexis Greenblatt

I have been studying martial arts since 1993. My practice began with Shihan Jeff Brooks in Northampton, MA in the art of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu where I achieved the rank of San Dan. In 2003, I began studying with Kyoshi Patrick Donahue in the art of Tomari Te Shorin Ryu. I practice Ju Jutsu and karate under Kyoshi Donahue, and teach karate to both adults and children in the Brattleboro School of Budo. In 2008, I achieved the rank of San Dan in Kiyatake-Ha Chubu Shorin-Ryu and was awarded the titles Shidoshi (technical advisor) and Renshi (senior instructor), assisting Kyoshi Donahue with overseeing the quality of our practice.

I have practiced in seminars with Master Teruo Chinen, Michael Pabst, Sensei David Poulicakos, and Sensei Sali Azem.

In my professional life, I am a teacher at the Hampshire County Jail in Northampton, Massachusetts where I teach adult basic education.

Martial arts has always been a stabilizing and essential part of my life. Not a day goes by that I don’t employ the discipline, compassion and confidence that have been cultivated in my practice. The benefits that I receive from this training do not come from having any great ability to do harm, but rather they come from having a positive and challenging practice that allows me to give of myself. I believe quite simply in the importance of practicing something that strengthens me and my resolve to find success, security, and community in my life. –Alexis Greenblatt
